Fast-food chain The Halal Guys recently launched vegan option The Meatless Gyro for a limited time at participating locations across the United States. The soy-free Meatless Gyro is made with pea protein, brown rice, coconut oil, Halal Guys spice mix, beets, mushrooms, and paprika, and is roasted on a spit and sliced to order. To complement its meatless gyro, the chain developed vegan tzatziki made with aquafaba—the brine in a can of chickpeas. The Meatless Gyro can be ordered as a wrap or as part of a platter where the vegan meat is served over rice, with a salad of lettuce and tomatoes and optional toppings, and drizzled with tzatziki or hot sauce.
Additionally, Halal Guys now offers Eggplant Hummus, another vegan option made with chickpeas lended with tahini sauce, olive oil, lemon juice, and spices that features eggplants sourced from Crete. The hummus can be ordered as part of a sandwich, as a side, on a platter, or in catering orders. “Along with our new Eggplant Hummus, we’re excited to introduce more menu items to fans of The Halal Guys who are looking for plant-based options,” the chain said in a statement. The Eggplant Hummus is the first of four uniquely flavored hummus options The Halal Guys will introduce in 2021 and, at the end of the year, fans will decide which of the four will be added to the menu permanently.
